Music Technology A Level at Heworth Grange Comprehensive School

Course description

This course is for anyone who enjoys being involved in music but not in a performing role. You will develop listening skills and also recording and composition techniques using different forms of technology. You will spend time in the recording studio learning how to set up and record different instruments and voices as well as learning how to use the computers to create electronic performances of pop songs

Course content


  • Sequencing
  • Recording
  • Arranging/Composing

Portfolio in year 12:

  • Sequenced realisation of given song (Rather Be by Clean Bandit in Sept 2014)
  • Multi-track recording of at least 8 microphones
  • Creative arrangement of a choice of two songs into one of two given styles (i.e. Smells Like Teen Spirit into 1950’s rock and Roll style)

Portfolio in year 13:

  • Sequenced realisation of given song
  • Multi track recording
  • Composition

Listening and Analysis:

  • Knowledge of Music Technology and Music Theory
  • Development of Pop Music

Listening exam which focuses on recognition of different styles of music and use of technology

Entry requirements

GCSE Music BTEC Music Level 2 Pass

Willingness to explore new and different types of music and technology.
