Film Studies A Level at Highfields School

Course description

Film Studies is a fascinating and enriching A Level which combines academci study with creative study. Students have the opportunity to write analytically and evaluate the ways directors create meaning in films. They also have the opportunity apply their knowledge of film making to their own creative projects.

The Film Studies staff are experienced and innovative and have a proven track record. You will experience a variety of different learning styles which will enrich your learning experience. Between the staff there is a diverse range of knowledge of the subject. We have excellent resources to deliver this courses, including a number of film making programmes on the Mac computers.

Course content

You will study the relationship between producers and audiences which includes looking at the processes of the film industry in Britain and America. As well as this you will study British Comedy in which you explore representations of Britain in film through the use of comedy conventions. US film is also studied where thetheme of race relations is explored. You will alsostudy World Cinema, Popular and Emotional responses to film and a single study where you explore ideas related to politics and society.

Entry requirements

You need to have achieved 5C’s in GCSE including English Language.


This course allows you to develop two different forms of study - analytical and creative. You will learn about how directors create meaning in films and be able to analyse and evaluate how effectively film makers use different methods in films. You will complete a piece of coursework which focuses on the micro-features of films. In this you analyse a short sequence of a film that you can choose. Furthermore you will analyse how macro-features of film are used to communicate ideas to audiences. After you've learned about these features, you will apply your knowledge of film making to your own creative coursework. You are assessed through coursework and an exam.

Future opportunities

It is possible to go to university to study Film and it is a subject that can lead to a wide range of careers in Media. In fact, there is high percentage of students who study Film and Media that fo on into employment after university. Whatever you choose to do, Film Studies allows you to develop skills that will benefit you, whatever you go on to do.

Cobines well with English, Drama and History. A great arts based option to go alongside any subject.
