Sport BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at The Grange School

Course description

This two year course is equivalent to three A Levels and is particularly appropriate for learners who are interested in progressing to a career in sport and physical activity development, either directly or through higher education.

The course has been developed to allow students to choose their path and combine units which reflect their strengths and interests. This may be sport and physical activity development roles either within education, coaching or elite sport and performance areas. Other learners may follow a sports development role in sport or leisure industry.

The course also helps with cognitive and problem solving skills, interpersonal skills and intra-personal skills.

Course content

There will be a strong emphasis on sports leadership throughout the course and students will be expected to complete the Community Sports Leaders Award. They will also work closely with local primary schools.

The course is made up of a number of different units:

Mandatory Units

  • Anatomy
  • Fitness, training, programming for health, wellbeing
  • Professional development in sports industry
  • Sports Leadership
  • Application of fitness testing
  • Sports psychology
  • Research methods in sport
  • Development and provision of sport/physical activity

Optional Units

  • Practical sports performance
  • Coaching for performance
  • Sports event organisation
  • Exercise and circuit-based physical activity
  • Athlete‚Äôs lifestyle
  • Sports injury management


There are 15 units of which 8 are mandatory.

There is 1 externally assessed exam, 2 externally assessed coursework units and 12 internally assessed coursework units.
