Course description

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Certificate in Children's Play, Learning and Development has been developed to reflect recent thinking and research in the sector and learners will be able to gain knowledge and understanding of child development for the age range of birth up to eight years.The course introduces you to work with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the childcare sector. You will complete units of study such as Patterns of Child Development and Promoting Children's Development through play.Learning is through a student centred approach including a variety of individual and group activities, practical sessions, presentations and the use of ICT to support research. Educational visits to local exhibitions and guest presenters speaking about a variety of topics enrich the learning experience.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade D including maths and English (or equivalent BTEC/Key Skills).


This qualification includes two externally assessed (examination) units along with internally assessed coursework.

Future opportunities

On completion of the course you can progress onto the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Children's Play, Learning and Development (EYE), provided you have achieved a minimum of grade 'C' at GCSE for English and maths. You may also access other level 3 qualifications.If you choose to look for employment in a childcare and education setting you may also continue to develop your skills through a work-based learning programme such as an NVQ in Children's Care, Learning and Development.
