Course description

On successful completion of this course you could go into employment or progress onto a Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.

Course content

-Health, safety and welfare in construction
-Principles of building, construction, information and communication
-Preparing Surfaces for Decoration
-Applying Paint Systems by Brush and Roller to complex areas
-Applying standard wallpapers and hangings to walls and ceilings
-Producing Specialist finishes for decorative work
-Applying and Creating Colour
-Erecting and Dismantling Access Equipment and Working Platforms

Entry requirements

Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating and level 1 Maths and English functional skill.


To pass this course you will have to successfully complete all practical and Job knowledge assessments and pass two on line end exams.
All assessments are carried out by the qualified assessors in line with the awarding body and industrial standards.

Future opportunities

If you successfully pass this course you can apply to progress on to the Level 3 diploma in Painting or go into employment.

Learners who have a good attendance, punctuality and demonstrated commitment and positive attitude can be recommended to the local employers if opportunities arise for apprenticeships.

Further information

You will be required to provide safety boots and appropriate clothes to wear in the workshop.

You will also be expected to provide your on stationary (e.g. pens, pencils and A4 folders)

Good level of English and Maths is important for you to be successful in your course,. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills.

If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English and Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skills, then you will required be work towards the qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress.

    • Woodlands Campus

      An £8.5 million expansion of our Woodlands Campus now incorporates a new state of the art specialist centre for multi-craft, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, carpentry and an expanded motor vehicle training facility. A new sports pitch also enhances the existing sports facilities.

      The new Engineering and Construction facility houses twelve new workshops; six for construction and six for motor vehicle. The rooms accommodate an MOT/motor sport workshop; an engine workshop and further rooms for decorating, plastering and brickwork.

      Woodlands has purpose-built engineering workshops as well as commercial-standard hair and beauty salons. Our IT facilities, learning resource centres and library are also first-rate.

      We also offer a selection of higher education courses at our Woodlands Campus so you can continue your studies with us.

      Via Bus or Train

      The main bus terminal in north Solihull is located in Chelmsley Wood centre. The number 94, 676, 694, 71, 966 and 966A stop at the main terminal with the number 94 stopping on Auckland Drive. The nearest train stations are Marston Green or Water Orton station both located approximately 20 minutes away.
