Chemistry A-Level at Tavistock Community College

Course description

The first year of this course is an AS level qualification and consists of 2 units of study. The student may continue to study for a second year in order to gain an A2 qualification. Our engaging and inspiring GCE Chemistry course enables contemporary chemistry contexts to be included within the teaching and learning programme. With a realistic, manageable level of content and assessment, it provides an enjoyable teaching and learning experience. Students will study aspects of chemistry that are often in the media and affect their lives. This fascinating and demanding course is taught in an applied way linking the content to real situations. Students will gain an appreciation of the way in which science is involved in solving the problems of the world: hunger, disease and pollution. There is a large practical component to the course enabling students to develop a range of skills and competences. • Unit 1: The Core Principles of Chemistry • Unit 2: Application of Core Principles of Chemistry • Unit 3: Chemistry Laboratory Skills I • Unit 4: General Principles of Chemistry I – Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry • Unit 5: General Principles of Chemistry II – Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry • Unit 6: Chemistry Laboratory Skills II

Entry requirements

5 A* - C grades including a B grade in GCSE Chemistry or 2xB in Additional Science or better


Units 1, 2, 4 & 5 are externally assessed. Units 3 & 6 are internally assessed
