A Level 7717
The AQA course in Literature offers students to build on their knowledge and interest in Literature from the GCSE course.
There are three components:
1. Literary genres – aspects of Comedy
2. Texts and genres – elements of Crime Writing
3. NEA [non exam component] – theory study and independent research writing.
English GCSE and English Literature GCSE: grade 5-6 or 6-5 accepted.
Students may do an AS in this subject as an exit qualification.
Please note, students will be required to puchase books and study guides through ParentPay at the start of year 12/year 13. The costs are approximately £55 for year 1 and approximately £50 for Year 2.
Component 1 - 40% - Literary genres - aspects of Comedy
3 tasks, 25 x 3 = 75 marks, 2.5 hours, closed book exam
A: a passage-based question on Twelfth Night.
B: an essay question on Twelfth Night.
C: one essay question linking two other texts from: The Importance of Being Ernest, Emma and Small Island.
Component 2- 40% - Texts and genres - elements of crime
3 tasks, 25 x 3 = 75 marks, 3 hours, clean open book exam
A: one compulsory question on an unseen passage.
B: an essay question on ONE set text: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner or Poetry by Wilde, Browning and Crabbe.
C: one essay question which connects 2 tests you did not use for section B.
Component 3 - 20%
2 tasks, each 1250-1500 words. 50 marks. Moderated by AQA.
An A level in this subject would enable you to apply for a degree in English or Publishing. Studying A level English Literature is desirable for other careers such as Journalism and Theatre, as well as Education.
