Mathematics A Level at London Academy of Excellence

Course description

Mathematics is the study of patterns. Themathematician looks at the world,
sees structure, and explores the rules that control, influence and follow from that
structure. Not only is it an intellectual discipline in its own right – the greatestminds,
from nameless Babylonian priests to Professor Stephen Hawking, have all
contributed toMathematics – but it also has essential applications in science,
engineering, telecommunications, information technology, financial trading and
multinational business.

Course content

You will study PureMathematics and also
AppliedMathematics (which encompasses
bothMechanics and Statistics). Pure
Mathematics is a treasure trove of techniques
for tackling problems. There is considerable
extension of the ideas introduced atGCSE
level – you learn how to solve cubic equations
in addition to quadratics, you study vectors
in three dimensions rather than just two, you
explore trigonometry beyond the familiar
geometrical context. Themost significant
idea developed in the first year is that of the
differential and integral calculus, which allows
you tomeasure properties such as the velocity
of a car or the slope of a curved roof, both of
whichmight initially appear to be changing
too rapidly to bemeasured.
In AppliedMathematics you will learn how to
simplify the complexity of the real world without
losing the ability tomake accurate, justifiable
predictions about its behaviour.Mechanics is
the study of the laws that describemotion: at
what angle should you kick a football to attain
the greatest range?Why does your stomach
lurch when a lift comes to a stop? You will also
develop your knowledge of probability and
statistics fromGCSE, so that you canmake
defensible conclusions in the presence of
uncertainty: if you flip a coin ten times and it
shows Tails every time, would you claim that
the coin is fake? If a patient tests positive for a
rare disease,must the patient actually have
the disease?


Entry requirements

Themore secure your grasp ofGCSEmaterial,
the stronger will be the foundations on which
you are building: aim for an A or A* grade
atGCSE, andmake sure you are always
attempting the harder questions at the end
of practice papers. Confident and accurate
algebra is especially important, so do lots of
extra practice on this. You get better atMaths
by practising it “little and often”, somake sure
you are answering someMaths questions
every day – just as Philippa Fawcett did.


We teach the AQA syllabus. You will sit three
examinations in June of Year 12 and then the
remaining three in Year 13. Calculators can be
used in all but the first examination.
