Applied Art and Design (Double Award) GCSE at Handsworth Grange School

Course content

The course consists of 3 units: Unit 1: 2D and 3D Visual Language You will explore what is meant by visual language and how artists use visual language to communicate their ideas and feelings. Unit 2: Materials, Techniques and Technology In this unit you will develop the skills that are required to enable you to use materials, techniques and technology effectively. Unit 3: Working to Project Briefs In this unit you will learn how to work to a project brief and the stages involved. You will be expected to produce written reports for all units of work.


Towards the end of the course you will have a 10 hour exam. You will be given the examination paper one month before the examination begins so that you can prepare work and ideas. This is really like doing another project but you do the final piece under examination conditions.

Future opportunities

If you are serious about developing your Art and Design skills, with the possibility of seeking a career or further qualifications post 16, then this is the course for you. You can use your qualifications to study a variety of advanced courses such as a vocational A level GCSE in Art and Design or a BTEC course in 3D design, Fashion and Clothing, Multimedia or Photography. Alternatively if you wish to start work after this qualification there are many career possibilities such as interior design and web site development.
