Apprenticeship - Level 2 in IT Application Specialist at County Training - Shropshire Council

Course description

This Apprenticeship provides the apprentice with the competence, skills and knowledge to work effectively and efficiently with IT systems, communication and productivity tools and software applications.

This includes the creation and amendment of many types of formatted information including documents, diagrams, spreadsheets and presentations. It also includes maintaining simple websites, using the internet to find and exchange information and using social media to disseminate information.

On Intermediate Level Apprenticeship you could work as a Data Administrator, entering and editing data using software such as Customer Relationship Management; Accounts; Payroll and Stock control systems. You would also be producing routine reports from the data held.

The IT User Apprenticeship offers the opportunity to develop excellent IT user skills that will give a good foundation for any type of role that includes dealing with computers in any type of industry. A person with good IT skills is essential in most business. IT is an increasingly important area, and whatever role you take you will be part of a fast-moving, ever-changing sector.

Course content

IT Application Specialist Intermediate Apprenticeship

Candidates will work towards achieving the following:

  • Level 2 Diploma in IT Application Specialist
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths & Level 2 Information Technology
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Entry requirements

Before you can start this course, you will need to have a relevant paid work placement of at least 30 hours per week. You need to be in a role that requires you to use IT as a main part function (but not necessarily solely)  of your work. There may be existing placements available or County Training can provide you with support to find a placement. This may be through an interview, some support with writing applications or preparing a CV, or even through work-experience placements.


The IT Application Specialist Apprenticeship is a combined knowledge and competency qualification. You will attend college on a day release basis to gain the underpinning knowledge that you need to build up your skills in a IT User role. 

In the workplace you will work with an assessor to gain a work-based qualification.  This will enable you to demonstrate your competence in a practical way.  You will gather evidence into a portfolio and your assessor will advice and guide you in this and will then assess that you have met the criteria in each area of competence.

Financial information

For 16-18 year olds undertaking an Apprenticeship, training will be fully funded. A contribution of £250/ £350 may be required for individuals aged 19 and over depending on existing qualifications held.

Future opportunities

After completing the Intermediate Apprenticeship it is likely you will be encouraged to move on to the Advanced Apprenticeship.

Following successful completion of the framework, successful apprentices will be able to continue to complete Level 4 or 5 programmes. Often candidates with qualifications in this area will naturally move into management and supervisory roles with the opportunity to do some further training.
