Art at Poole Grammar School
The new AS and A2 examinations consist of mainly painting and drawing work, driven by critical study.
They are modular examinations, made up of two units for AS and two units for A2. The units for each level cover two aspects:
- practical work with a related, illustrated critical study;
- an eight hour examination at the end of the second term.
A work journal is a requirement for each unit. The journal documents:
- research on art and artists
- the development of ideas
- an evaluation of practical work.
You should enjoy using drawing and painting, photography and perhaps computer imaging to observe, organise and to collect visual information to make paintings and perhaps some three-dimensional work. The ability to produce coherent written criticism and personal comment on your progress is also important.
Places on AS Level courses can, subject to available places, normally be offered to applicants who meet the minimum course requirements. These are usually based on the applicant’s best 8 GCSE results, including English and Mathematics, with a minimum of 344 points, with an A* A or B grade in the subjects chosen - or a related discipline, if appropriate (in Mathematics, the minimum grade of B must be at Higher Tier).
