Mobile Applications BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma/ Extended Diploma at Uxbridge College

Course description

This course has been designed for students interested development of applications for mobile devices including phones and tablets. The course provides a basis for further training and higher education or for moving into employment. Students can develop the skills, knowledge and understanding, that underpin a range of occupations in the mobile development industry including digital asset creation and programming.

Course content

Year 1 course = 90 credit Diploma.

Year 2 course = a further 90 credits providing in total a 180 credit Extended Diploma.

The mobile applications development industry has expanded over recent years increasing the demand for skilled software developers with specific knowledge of mobile systems. Using the standard BTEC Level 3 units, we have combined the software development, computer graphics and interface design elements to develop a mobile applications pathway. You will be given the opportunity to develop software which will run on the popular Android mobile operating platform including games and productivity software.

  • Object Oriented Programming [for mobile devices]
  • Software Design and Development
  • Digital Graphics [for mobile devices]
  • Human Computer Interaction
  • Database design and development
  • Computer systems architecture
  • Systems analysis and design

Those completing the 90 credit diploma at the required level will have the opportunity to progress onto a number of the extended diploma programmes at the college (subject to unit matches).

Although the primary focus of this course is to teach you software development for mobile devices, you will develop a solid understanding that will enable you to enter into the field of software development.

You will learn the Java programming language, an extensively used language for web and imbedded mobile applications development and the software development process using the Android platform. You will also gain a solid understanding of various aspects of desktop computing and computer programming.

In addition to this, the course will provide you with the personal and organisational skills required to ensure you can offer a complete package to the potential employer or educational institute.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grades A*-C including English and maths or a relevant Level 2 qualification with a distinction (merit may be considered) and English and maths at Level 2.

Assessment

This course is assessed through a combination of assignments and projects designed to give you hands-on experience of basic software development. It is 100% coursework based.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of this course you may transfer onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT€“ Mobile App Development (180 credits) and then you may go to into higher education or into a specialist area of employment.

This course is nationally recognised within industry and commerce. Successful candidates can expect to find employment opportunities in software development, computer programming and systems analysis and design.
