Accounting Apprenticeship at Furness College

Course description

The AAT Apprenticeship program is for you if, you’re in or looking for employment in finance or an accounts department. 

Course content

Apprentice Level 2- Certificate in Accounting (over 12 months)
This will include:
• Processing bookkeeping transactions;
Double entry bookkeeping
Recording cash and credit transactions
Preparing and recording financial documentation
Maintaining and reconciling the cash book
Maintaining petty cash records
Processing business transactions and extracting a trial balance
• Control accounts, journals and the banking system
• Basic costing
• Computerised accounting (SageLine50)
• Working effectively in accounting and finance
• Level 1 in Mathematics and Level 2 in English

Advanced Apprentice Level 3 - Diploma in Accounting (over 12 months)

This will include:
• Accounts preparation
• Prepare final accounts for sole traders and partnerships
• Cost and revenues
• Indirect tax (VAT)
• Cash management
• Working with Spreadsheets
• Professional Ethics
• Level 2 in Mathematics and English

Business Skills Units - (work based portfolio)
• Working in teams
• Planning and delivering business communication activities
• Evaluate and improve own performance in a business environment
• SpreadSheet software ^
• Presentation software
• Deliver a presentation
• Organising and facilitating meetings and workshops
• Developing commercial awareness
• Managing project finances
^ May have exemptions from this unit if studied at level 3

Entry requirements

These are dependent on the sector and the criteria of some employers, but they are normally:

Apprentice Level 2: A minimum of four GCSEs at grades A – E or an equivalent qualification.

Advanced Apprentice Level 3: An Apprenticeship at Level 2 or other equivalent qualification

Higher Level Apprenticeship Level 4: These are available in some subject areas; but in all instances you will need to be already qualified to Level 3.

All units include a computer based assessment or project. At level 4 you will also be expected to gather work-place evidence in the form of a portfolio for the Business Skills units. Maths and English are assessed by examination and a portfolio of evidence.

There are books and stationery requirements for study. Book codes and details will be provided at the start of your course. Fees vary and are available on request.

Future opportunities

Once the Apprenticeship has finished there is the opportunity to carry on working, maybe get promoted or if appropriate, progress onto advanced level apprenticeships. In some instances you can go on to higher education in a college or university.
