Level 1 Business and IT Certificate at Leeds City College

Course description

The Level 1 course is aimed at introducing students to IT skills and techniques as well as Business knowledge to enable them to progress onto higher levels.

This exciting course incorporates a wide range of business and IT units to introduce learners to the ever-changing sector. Alternative methods for collecting evidence are used throughout the course, with students being given a choice of these to enable them to take some ownership of their own learning. Students also work towards gaining qualifications in English and Maths with extra support available where needed.

Course content

You will cover a selection of topics including:

  • Being organised
  • Developing a personal progression plan
  • Branding a Product
  • Presenting a Business Idea
  • Contributing to Running an Event
  • Developing Digital information using IT
  • Creating a Digital Animated Graphic
  • Creating a website

You will gain a wider knowledge in Business and IT, along with personal and social development skills. You will be based in computer classrooms and will also develop your general IT skills, as well as the more specialist units.
The course is linked to seeking employment and guidance and support will be given in searching and applying for jobs within the Business sector or progressing on to further education. You will also develop your skills in Maths and English.

Entry requirements

If you wish to enrol to the course you could come with a range of qualifications which could include GCSEs, units of qualifications already taken or have few or no qualifications.
Students should have a genuine interest in Business and IT, a commitment to complete homework and project work on time and the ability to communicate and demonstrate socially acceptable behaviour in College.


You will be assessed continually by assignments and practical activities, including presentations, and project work. These are externally moderated by the examination body.

Financial information

Students aged 16-18 do not pay fees.

Future opportunities

If you successfully pass all the qualifications may then you have the opportunity to progress onto a range of higher qualifications at Keighley College. Due to the nature of the course,  there are more options for Level 2 progression in both Business and IT. Some students choose to specialise further and opt for Digital Games Production.
