BTEC National Certificate in Sport and Exercise Science at Raine's Foundation School

Course description

The course aims to: develop your interest in and enthusiasm for PE, including developing an interest in further study and careers in PE; enable you to appreciate how sport influences the many different facets of today’s world develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of PE and how they relate to each other.

What will I Study?

Unit 1: The Body in Action

  • Understanding the structure and function of the skeletal system and how it responds to exercise
  • Understanding the structure and function of the muscular system and how it responds to exercise
  • Understanding the structure and function of the cardiovascular system and how it responds to exercise
  • Understanding the structure and function of the respiratory system and how it responds to exercise
  • Understanding the different energy system and their use in sport and exercise

Unit 2: Health and Safety in Sport

  • Health and safety in sport
  • Risk assessments
  • Know how to maintain the safety of participants and colleagues in sports environment
  • Be able to plan a safe sporting activity

Unit 3: Training and fitness for sport

  • Understanding the fitness requirements of different sporting activities
  • Understand different methods of physical fitness training
  • Be able to plan a fitness training program
  • Be able to monitor and evaluate a fitness training program

Unit 4: Sport coaching

  • Understand the roles, responsibilities and skills of sport coaches
  • Understand the techniques used by coaches to improve the performances of athletes
  • Be able to plan a sports coaching session
  • Be able to deliver a sports coaching session

Unit 5: Sports Development

  • Understand key concepts in sports development
  • Know about key providers of sports development
  • Understand how quality is measured in sports development
  • Know about sports development in practice

Unit 6: Fitness testing for sport and Exercise

  • Understand a range of laboratory-based and field-based fitness tests
  • Understand the practice of health screening
  • Be able to prepare for and conduct appropriate fitness tests
  • Be able to analyse the results of fitness tests

Unit 7+8: Practical team and individual sport

  • Be able to use a range of skills, techniques and tactics
  • Understand the rules and regulations of sports
  • Be able to assess own performances
  • Be able to assess the performance of a team or individual athlete in sport

Entry requirements

GCSE grades at A–C in English and Science are strongly recommended.
