Construction - BTEC First Diploma at Queensbury School
This course is offered by ‘Go Live’. Go-live is a programme of learning that allows students to study for a vocational qualification. Two days each week you will be out of school with a training provider and the remaining days will be in school working on other projects. The programme is for students aged 16-19.
Are you a practical person who has an interest in the construction industry but have not yet decided on a career path? The BTEC First Diploma in Construction is designed to provide a specialist work-related and motivating programme of study addressing the key areas of knowledge, understanding and skills required for learners contemplating a career within the construction industry. The course offersyou the opportunity of trying out a wide rangeof construction related activities, either by following a general path covering a range of different specialist units, or in greater depth by following a specialist pathway,As well as performing the skills for brickwork, carpentry and painting and decorating, the student will learn about key issues of health, safety and welfare. This qualification also provides opportunities to learn about Construction Science and the maths that are required to operate safely within the construction industry.

What we are looking for are enthusiastic students who genuinely want to improve themselves. Academic ability, although important to all courses, is secondary to commitment and a willingness to work hard. This is a course that valuespractical skills and the ability to work with others in school and at an external training provider.If you are interested in this course, you must speak to your Head of Year in the first instance.
The course is very practical, but a portfolio needs to be produced by the student with support from the tutor. You will perform practical demonstrations when required and will also have classroom sessions to learn and consolidate the underpinning knowledge. The course is assessed through regular observations and practical assessments and you will have access to a one-to-one review of your learning plans when you will be given written feedback.All students are required to pay for their safety boots.
Learner options may include progression onto a further qualification for construction and the built environment, for example vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC National qualification in Construction, Civil Engineering or Building Services Engineering. Alternatively you may wish to enter into employment within the construction industry with the possibility of undertaking additional training.
