AS/A2 Level English (Language and Literature) at Burton and South Derbyshire College
The course will appeal to students looking for natural progression from GCSE English and/or GCSE English Literature. The syllabus has been designed to encourage an integrated approach to the study of language and literature. Students will learn principles and methods that they can apply to any text, including their own writing. The subject requires students to identify and consider how attitudes and values are conveyed in speech and writing. In addition, the syllabus makes use of students’ wider, independent reading.
GCSE English – Grade C (essential) GCSE English Literature – Grade C (preferable) These requirements may be waived for adult students. Note: students are required to purchase their own copies of texts. These must be without annotation in examinations.
The course offers a suitable foundation for the study of English, or a related area of study, in Higher Education. It can also prepare students for future employment.
AS Level - Two modules: • 1. Poetry (pre-1900) and Prose (both examination-open book). 2. Original Writing (coursework). A2 Level - Two modules: • 1. Shakespeare and one other play; Original Spoken Texts (both coursework). 2. Comparative Analysis; Study of Poetry or Prose Text (both examination-open book).
