Physics A Level at Smithdon High School

Course description

Physics is the most fundamental of the Sciences, dealing with concepts which range from the tiniest parts of matter to the scale of the whole universe. Physics applications underpin almost all the technology used throughout the whole of modern life eg Materials, Energy Generation, Communications and Transportation. A Physics A level is not only a necessary qualification for many career options (eg all the different engineering fields) but is also an extremely useful subject to have studied for a large number of Science based careers. It equips you with the skills to deal with quantitative, mathematical problems as well as problems which require critical thinking, whatever subject area they are in.

Entry requirements

Physics is a highly valued subject. It works well in conjunction with other Science subjects but is also complemented by Maths. A n umber of University courses list A level Physics as a pre-requisite. Physics is a very challenging Science course and students must achieve at least a grade B in GCSE Physics or a grade B in both Core and Additional Science (with the Physics component mod ules also at grade B) in order to meet the entry requirements.

Future opportunities

Students who study Physics acquire good analytical, mathematical, ICT and practical skills which allow them to move into other careers if they do not continue to study Physics. For example, physicists are found in the health service, the food industry, telecommunications, management and the financial sector. Within finance the analytical and mathematical modelling skills required to study Physics are in great demand.
