Performing Arts Level 1 at Leeds City College
The BTEC Level 1 in Performing Arts is a practical one year course, designed to give you an introduction to the Creative Arts Industry and to help you discover your talents, interests and strengths in a range of disciplines.
Whether you’re a complete beginner to the Performing Arts world or you feel like you need to build your confidence as a person or in performing – Level 1 Performing Arts could be the right choice for you!
Throughout the year you will be take part in workshops led by our highly skilled staff which will help you explore your skills in Acting, Singing and Dancing. You will also have the opportunity to design your own set, which you will showcase to your audience during your two major performances in January and May.
Once you have achieved this qualification, you will have explored which Performing Arts discipline is the one you would like to take forward. You will then have the opportunity to apply for a Level 2 qualification in Acting, Dance or Performing Arts.
On this course you will develop your practical acting and movement ability, taking part in a range of workshops and classes.
You will study units in:
- Preparing and presenting performing arts work
- Acting skills
- Dance skills
- Working in the Creative Arts industry
- Theatre Design
You will be involved in two performance pieces during the year, developing your performance skills and giving you experience of working in a performance environment. Your final performance will take place in our very own Park Lane Theatre.
You will also develop your employability skills through participating in workshops, performances and external activities such as touring your final major production. You also have the opportunity to achieve your Maths and English and will participate in our tutorial and enrichment programme.
2 E's at GCSE or equivalent or if you are currently studying the new GCSE specification we would require two 2's. Candidates will be expected to display a genuine interest in Performing Arts at interview either by participating in a practical workshop led by the tutor or by talking about a key area of interest. However if you are worried you may not meet the above requirements, we would still love to hear from you!
Applications should be supported by a reference showing students to be motivated in the area of Performing Arts.
Students on our Level 1 programme are continually assessed throughout the academic year. We understand that everybody works differently, therefore we make sure that we use a variety of assessment methods such as: Practical, class based assessments and performances, Workbooks adapted to suit the individual learner, written logs and notes made during classes. We also use video and voice recording software for those who struggle with handwritten assignments.
On completion of your course you will have improved your performance skills and have gained some understanding of the Creative Arts industry. You will also have developed your self-confidence, presentation skills and team-working potential, preparing you for progression onto Level 2 in Performing Arts, or further study at Level 2 in another subject specialism.
English and Maths will be built into your course if your grades are below 4/5
