Children's Play, Learning and Development (BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate) at Brimsham Green School

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Children’s Play, Learning and Development gives an introduction to study of the sector. It is intended as an Applied General qualification, and is equivalent in size to one A Level. It supports access to a range of higher education courses, possibly but not exclusively in the early years sector, if taken alongside further Level 3.

Entry requirements

Mandatory Units

1 Children's Development - Written examination, externally marked

2 Development of Children's Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills - Task set and marked externally, carried out under supervised conditions

3 Play and Learning – Mandatory Synoptic Unit – internally marked

Optional Units (one of which will be selected to support students vocational interest)

5 Keeping Children Safe

6 Children’s Physical Development, Care and Health Needs

8 Working with Parents and Others in Early Years

11 The Early Years Foundation Stage

Work Placement Requirements 50 hours in at least one setting, with children from birth to seven years 11 months.

Assessment

This course is taught over 2 years and consists of 7 units, of which 3 are mandatory, 2 are external.

Mandatory content (83%), external assessment (66%), 1 optional unit and work experience.

Future opportunities

This course will provide experience and knowledge for students that wish to continue studying or follow a route to employment in the early years’ sector or within organisations that promote Health and Social Care. Students can tailor their options in year 2 to focus on a particular area of interest to them in their vocational choice.

The BTEC extended certificate will also contribute UCAS points for those who wish to study at Higher Education.

This is a new course from Sept 2016 and so we reserve the right to change to a suitable alternative should we feel it would benefit our students.
