Course description


In the current economic climate, business is never out of the news, with some very famous brands having struggled with the financial consequences of the credit crunch. The world of business has a huge impact on our everyday lives.

We come into contact with some form of business every single day, whether it’s buying a pizza, using a telephone or posting a letter. There are many aspects to running a business and the Business Studies course aims to familiarise you with many of them.

If you are interested in marketing, production, accounts, personnel issues or any of the themes listed above, then A-level Business Studies is for you. Business Studies opens the door to so many job opportunities, it is not surprising that it is one of the most popular subjects in the country.

Many students recognise the head start that Business Studies can give them in a highly competitive job market.

Course content


In Year 12, the AS course focuses on Enterprise and the challenges of starting a business which consists of:

Unit 1: Planning & Financing a Business

This module examines the challenges and issues of starting a business, including key financial concepts such as: sources of start-up finance, planning a cash flow and break even as well as how new businesses go about marketing their products.

Unit 2: Managing a Business

This module looks at how businesses (small, medium-sized or large) manage the key functions of People, Operations Management, Marketing and Finance as they become more established in the market and grow.


In Year 13, the A2 focuses on large multi-national businesses and the course will examine the strategic decision making of business, for example looking at accounting documents, analysing marketing decisions, looking at communication in the workplace and how to improve efficiency. The A2 course also contains a guided research topic, which requires students to conduct research on a chosen topic and answer questions on it in the module 4 exams.

Unit 3: Strategies for Success

Unit 3 focuses on larger businesses which may be trading in international markets, and how managers might measure the performance of the business. This unit considers functional strategies that larger businesses may  adopt to achieve their objectives.

Unit 4: The Business Environment & Managing Change

Unit 4 assesses the external factors that can act as catalysts for change, and considers these in relation to a range of businesses. This unit also examines the ways in which businesses can manage change successfully  when responding to external stimuli. Both A2 units are synoptic.




Entry requirements


5 GCSE Grades A* - C (Mathematics minimum Grade B).


AS Year - Unit 1:

40% of AS, 20% of A Level

1 hour 15 minutes examination

60 marks

Short answer questions and extended responses based on a mini case study.


AS Year - Unit 2:

60% of AS, 30% of A Level

1 hour 30 minutes examination

80 marks

Compulsory, multi-part data response questions.



A2 Year - Unit 3

25% of A Level

1 hour 45 minutes examination

80 marks

Questions requiring extended answers based on an unseen case study drawing upon knowledge from AS units.

A2 Year - Unit 4:

25% of A Level

1 hour 45 minutes examination

80 marks

Pre-release research tasks leading to the first section of a two section examination.

Second section will consist of choice of essays. All questions will be essay style and synoptic therefore drawing upon knowledge from all four units.
