Media Studies A-Level at Campion School

Course description

The course consists of two units per year. AS: Unit 1 (MEST1) Investigating Media, an exam worth 50% of your final AS grade, consisting of a two hour long exam, with four sections: Section A has four compulsory short answer questions and Section B which allows a choice of one of two essays.

Unit 2 (MEST2) Creating Media is worth 50% of the AS grade. This is a practical unit (coursework) which will be externally set by the Exam Board. You will produce two linked production pieces taken from two of the three media platforms you study at AS plus one 1500 words evaluation.

A2: Unit 3 (MEST3) Media: Critical Perspectives. Worth 25% of your final A2 grade; it’s a two hour written examination with two sections: Section A consists of three compulsory questions on unseen stimulus pieces and Section B consists of one essay chosen from two compulsory questions.

Unit 4 (MEST4) Media: Research and Production Worth 25% of your final A2 grade, it’s a practical unit with two sections: a Critical Investigation and a linked production piece.

Course content

Key Media concepts such as audience, representation and institutions for AS, plus Broadcasting, eMedia and Print for your AS key areas of study (platforms). For A2 you will cover areas such as: politics and the media; gender and ethnicity and semiotics whilst also looking at consumption and production.

Entry requirements

At least a grade C in English. You do not have to have studied Media Studies for GCSE.
