Applied Science BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Cramlington Learning Village

Course description

The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science gives you the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to prepare for employment or further education.

It is a practical course that follows on from BTEC Science or GCSE. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic work place situations, activities and demands. You will work through the listed modules below building a portfolio of work.

Course content

Six units need to be completed including:
Fundamentals of Science
Working in the Science Industry
Scientific Practical Techniques
Physiology of Human Body Systems
Microbiological Techniques
Diseases & Infection (subject to OFQUAL validation)

Entry requirements

4 A* - C GCSEs across a range of subjects including CC in Additional Science/C in Biology or Pass in Level 2 BTEC. Students are expected to have a C grade or better in English.


The course is 100% coursework assessed.

The evidence for assessment is based on the coursework submitted through assignments, practical reports in the laboratory or educational visits and graded either as a Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Future opportunities

BTEC Level 3 Diplomas are valued by many employers and Higher Education Institutes. You could go on to study Nursing, Biomedical Sciences, Forensics, and other applied courses at university

You may want to use this qualification to move into employment, perhaps working in a laboratory situation in quality assurance or a hospital or education setting
