Hospitality and Catering Level 1 NVQ at Northampton College

Course description

This is a basic course, introducing the student to the skills required within the kitchen and restaurant areas of the hospitality industry. As well as studying generic units such as: - Health and safety and food safety - Team work and - Customer care Students will be involved in the: - Preparation and cooking of a range of different food stuffs - Restaurant Service and - Enterprise Skills. Students will learn and develop these skills in many ways including skills sessions, theory classes and working the both the kitchen and restaurant of the Lane Brasserie.

Course content

Students who wish to pursue a career in catering but require support with literacy and numeracy which will be essential for achieving further qualifications.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade E or above.

Assessment

When the student is ready, most of the course is assessed by observing the students demonstrate these skills within the Brasserie kitchen. This is backed up with a series of on-line multiple choice questions to check knowledge together with some short answer questions.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of this course, you could progress to the VRQ Level 1 Professional Chef Diploma or continue training in the workplace through an Apprenticeship programme.

Further information

You will be expected to wear clean, pressed chefs uniform (including safety shoes) when you are working in any college kitchen. When working in the Brasserie you will need plain black trousers and a polo shirt. Lists of equipment will be sent out to you when they are confirmed. Financial support for the cost of the uniform may be available through the college bursary fund.
