Performing Arts at Felixstowe Academy

Course description

Performing arts is a vocational course, which means that it is designed to develop and recognise skills appropriate to the world of work. You will be expected to work as part of a team, taking part in workshops, rehearsals and performances in a professional manner. You will develop communication skills to a high level and will be confident about presenting yourself in a variety of situations to diverse audiences. Confidence in presentation, team skills and clarity in communication are vital skills for most professions. In addition who wish to pursue their careers in performing arts further, the course is an ideal foundation for training at performing arts colleges or drama schools, and the qualification also transfers into UCAS points for university candidates.

The BTEC courses can be taken alongside 2 or 3 AS and A2 courses, or the practically minded may prefer to consider some of out level 3 options. Those who wish to broaden their talents within the arts may wish to consider Drama and Theatre Studies, Art and Design, Music Technology or Music alongside the performing arts course. Work experience can also be arranged for students who may prefer to develop their skills in the workplace. Vocational training opportunities are about providing you with choices.

Course content

The course content will be shaped by both students and tutors in collaboration. A number of unit options are available enabling candidates to develop the skills which most suit their talents and interests. Within these units students will be also be given scope for negotiating aspects such as choice of production style, venue and audience.

The students should expect to work with professional artists in a workshop situation, where appropriate, in order to equip them with specific skills required for presentations or performances which they will develop, manage, market and perform.

Entry requirements

The qualities we are looking for are determination, initiative, imagination, performance potential, independence and last but not least teamwork skills.

Entry to this course will be by interview and where appropriate audition. Academic attainment at GCSE will not necessarily be an issue where potential candidates clearly demostrate the qualities we are looking for. Students who have not taken a performing arts subjects at GCSE will be considered for entry, but may have to take part in an entry workshop to determine their suitability for the course.


Year 12 Example units:

  • Assignment 1 - Devising plays
  • Assignment 2 - Performing to an audience
  • Assignment 3 - Theatre for children, musical theatre performance or dance couched with core
  • Assignment 4 - Applying physical theatre

Equals 30 credits - Level 3 certificate in performing arts.

Year 13 Example units

  • Assignment 4 Continued - Applying physical theatre
  • Assignment 5 - Auditions for actors
  • Assigment 6 - Contemporary theatre performance

Equals 60 credits - Level 3 subsidiary diploma in performing arts

Assessment is continuous and there is no written exam requirement on this course. Performers are expected to provide evidence of their learning through a log book or diary, recorded interview, written evaluation, photographs, vidoes of performance work, presentations or a combination of the both.

On each assignment a learner will acheive pass, merit or distinction. They will have more than one opportunity to visit any of the assessed criteria.
