First Skills at Newbury College

Course description

First Skills is a full time course for learners with Moderate Learning Disabilities and Difficulties, who want to develop their skills in vocational learning, employability and Personal and Social Development. All learners will attend Functional English and Mathematics sessions each week. For work experience, there is a planned 2 week work experience block in the summer term, as well as a full programme of Enrichment delivered across the year. (Learners will attend college for three days per week on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.00am to 3.00pm. The course lasts for a total of 36 weeks).


A significant focus on the course will be on Vocational Learning. This could include Hair and Beauty, Construction, Brickwork, Animal Care, Motor Vehicle and Catering. These subjects will be delivered in the afternoons. At the end of the course, learners will have the opportunity to progress confidently onto a Level 1 course at the College. In certain cases learners may require a further year on First Skills before progressing onto a higher level college course. All learners have access to the whole campus; including all amenities and resources. It is anticipated that learners will also carry out sport activities delivered by the college Sports Leader. The qualification delivered will be the ASDAN Entry 3 Award and Certificate in Personal and Social Development. Some learners will also complete Functional Skills at entry level, as appropriate. There will be extensive enrichment activities delivered to include; visits to places of local interest, guest speakers, meals out and cinema visits for example.

Entry requirements

This will be by interview and assessments. Some learners may have previously completed courses in Foundation Learning or attained Entry level qualifications from another provider.


Assessment will be by moderation of accredited work as well as completing a folder of learner work and in Individual Learning Plans.

Future opportunities

Learners can progress onto a Level 1 course at the College. In some cases learners may apply for a further year at First Skills, subject to learner needs and interview.
