Further Mathematics AS & A Level at Hove Park School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

The Further Mathematics course enables students to gain familiarity with topics covered either briefly or not at all during the standard Mathematics A-level. Topics covered in the first Further Pure unit include geometry through the study of conics, a fundamental treatment of calculus, complex numbers, and matrices and their applications (the latter two topics being fundamental to the further study of physics and engineering, for example). There are a large number of additional units that can be drawn on, covering extra topics in Pure Mathematics, as well as mechanics, statistics, and decision mathematics.

Course content

There are a large number of module choices that make up the Further Mathematics A-level. At present, we offer Further Pure units 1 and 4 and Decision 1 at AS level, with A2 units drawn from a variety of Pure, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision units. The exact composition of the second year is determined following discussions with students as to the units most relevant to them.

Entry requirements

5 A*-C GCSE grades including at least an A grade in Mathematics.

Future opportunities

An A-level in Further Mathematics is increasingly requested by universities when selecting students for technical subjects, such as mathematics, physics, economics and other sciences. Even for students considering other subjects for future study, an A-level in Further Mathematics demonstrates an ability to reason and problem-solve at a high level.

Careers include: engineering, finance, medicine and academic research.
