Fabrication and Welding Level 1 at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Course description

This course allows students to learn, develop and practice the basic introductory skills required for employment and/or career progression in the engineering sector.

This course is for you if you are considering a career in engineering. The course will provide a basic understanding of engineering principles and processes. It is taught with a combination of theory and practical units that include a number of engineering units, one mandatory unit and other optional units depending on demand.

Course content

The following will be covered on this course;

• Working in engineering
• Carrying out mechanical assembly
• Working with sheet metals
• Carrying out basic fitting techniques
• Carrying out basic turning techniques
• Carrying out basic milling techniques.

Entry requirements

You will need a 2 (E) or above or equivalent in science and maths. Previous experience in fabrication and engineering or a strong interested in fabrication and welding is preferred.


This programme is assessed through a variety of practical tests and external examinations.

Financial information

Students will need to purchase overalls and protective footwear.

Future opportunities

Successful students can progress onto an apprenticeship programme, or any related programme in the college. You might also choose employment in the Welding and Fabrication Industry. Alternatively, you may wish to progress onto the level 2 Welding and Fabrication Practice.

You will complete a work placement in a relevant engineering company.

Are trips and residentials organised during the course?

All students will have enrichment activities as part of their study programme.

The college works closely with many companies, all staff come from an industry background.

    • By Rail: Anyone travelling by train should disembark at Central Station in Warrington. Our Winwick Road Campus is around a 20 minute walk along the A49 (you will pass the Warrington Wolves RLFC stadium and the Tesco supermarket on your left).

      By Bus: Warrington & Vale Royal College is easily accessible by bus from the town centre and nearby Cheshire districts. Bus numbers* 19, 20, 21, 22 from the Warrington Bus Station to Winwick Road Campus.
