Biology AS/A level at Hatch End High School
Biology is a complex and broad science. You will enjoy this course if you are interested in all aspects of living organisms, how they work and how they interact with their environment. You will develop a logical approach to problem solving, combined with practical applications in experiments and fieldwork, with a strong emphasis on Mathematics.
You will cover four modules for AS. These range from practical skills, foundation in Biology cells, exchange, biodiversity, evolution, and disease in Year 12. In addition, a further two modules that include energy, communication, genetics, evolution, and homeostasis will be studied for the A Level qualification.
How will I be taught?
Lectures, practical work, field work, visits and independent research
6 GCSE grades A* will require use of higher tier GCSE maths skills. -C/9-5 to include at least a Grade 6 in Maths and two Grade 6’s in Science.
All exams are at the end of the course and AS does not contribute to the A Level grades. By externally assessed written examination papers, with synoptic component. Practicals are assessed through written examination papers and a separate Practical Endorsement for A Level. 10% of the grade 6 GCSE grades A* will require use of higher tier GCSE maths skills.
A Level Biology can open up a range of careers and higher education courses in medicine, veterinary science and dentistry, optometry, physiotherapy, pharmaceutical sciences, forensic science, biomedical and biological sciences, environmental studies, conservation, environmental health and food sciences. A Level Biology can also help gain direct entry into employment, especially into the scientific and related sectors.
