Further Mathematics AS and A level at Chace Community School

Course description

Further Mathematics falls into four areas of study: Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Mathematics.

Successful completion of six modules over two years would result in an A Level qualification. Successful completion of three modules over one or two years would result in an AS Level qualification.

This AS Level is currently offered as a twilight lesson only.  Students attend two hours per week after school.  

Further Mathematics is beneficial to anyone looking to study a mathematics rich subject at university. 

Course content

Further Pure Maths 

An extension of the techniques and knowledge gained at GCSE. Developing algebraic and manipulative skills. New concepts are also introduced and developed including complex numbers and matrices. 


The study of statics and moving bodies including forces and energy. 


Presentation and analysis of data.  Probability and probability distributions. 

Decision Maths 

The application of mathematical models to solve real world problems where the development of a model inevitably requires making assumptions to simplify the problem.  

Entry requirements

•       Higher level GCSE Maths Grade A* - B, 

•       Have already chosen to do Mathematics at A level

•       Commitment to do after school sessions and work independently at home. 


Each of the six modules are assessed by a 1½ hour written examination.

AS Level students cover FP1, D1, and D2 (assessed in June). 

A2 Level students cover FP2, M2  and S2 (assessed in June).
