English Literature A level at Brookfield Community School

Course description

If you enjoy reading, discussing and writing about poetry, prose and drama, then English Literature is the course for you.

Course content

You will study a range of literary texts in depth, looking at aspects of plot, character, theme, writer’s style, different interpretations of texts and their contexts.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of grade C in English Language and a grade C in English Literature at GCSE.

Assessment

AS English Literature (100% examination)

Paper 1: Literary Genres (Drama) (1 hour 30 minutes, worth 50%)

Paper 2: Literary Genres (Prose and Poetry) (1 hour 30 minutes, worth 50%)

A Level English Literature
The A Level course consolidates AS study by revisiting three of the set texts encountered previously and also introduces new literary texts.

Paper 1: Literary Genres (2 hours 30 minutes, worth 40%)

Paper 2: Texts and Genres (3 hours, worth 40%)

Non-exam assessment: Theory and Independence (worth 20%)

Future opportunities

Past students have gone on to study a wide range of literary based courses at university. This subject is also useful for law degrees or any Arts, Humanities or Social-Science degrees.
