Drama A Level at Grace Academy

Course description

The subject is split into 4 units. Students must learn the origins of theatre and how certain practitioners have developed performance over time. They will create performance, analyse techniques and direct others. There is an emphasis on making students decide on the type of drama practitioner they want to become and getting them to justify the choices they make.

Course content

It improves you as a person and as a student. You will learn to work with others in high pressure situations. You will be given the opportunity to perform to others and work with a variety of professional organisations.

You will also:

  • Get the opportunity to be involved in all Academy productions.
  • Be invited to numerous theatre visits.
  • Be invited to attend the Performing Arts residential trip (we are going to London this year).
  • Work with outside professionals in practical workshops.

Unit 1: Exploring a script

Unit 2: Performing a play and a monologue

Unit 3: Creating a play

Unit 4: Understanding theatre, a script, and how to rehearse

Entry requirements

Preferable (but not essential): GCSE C or above Drama and English


Unit 1 and 3 are assessed by the teacher, based on quality of performance (in front of an audience for unit 3) and written evidence of understanding.

Unit 2 is assessed by an examiner based on quality of performance in front of an audience.

Unit 4 is a written exam answering questions about a specific play and a performance the student has watched.

Future opportunities

Degree level Drama/Performing Arts/Musical Theatre.

Stage School.

An increased confidence and ability to reason, regardless of your chosen field of progression.
