Childcare and Education (Early Year's Educator) Diploma Level 3 at Sunderland College

Course description

This qualification prepares learners to become Early Year’s Educators, enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years.

Upon achievement of this qualification it is intended that learners will be able to enter the workforce as Early Year’s Educators or access Higher Education.


Course content

The course covers the underlying principles involved in the care, learning and development of children from birth to primary school years including:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Legislation frameworks and professional practice
  • Play, development and learning for school readiness
  • Professional Development

Entry requirements

To get on this course you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of five GCSE’s at grade A* – C including English and Maths
  • DBS clearance
  • A health check
  • Two satisfactory references
  • Pass the childcare selection interview process

If you intend to progress to university to study Primary Teaching you will need to have GCSE’s in English, Mathematics and Science at grade B.



This course is taught with a mixture of theoretical study in the classroom and practical study including 750 hours of work experience on placement with children up to seven years old. Your work will be assessed by your tutor or assessor and this will include direct observation in the work place, a portfolio of evidence and written assignments.

Future opportunities

Upon achievement of this qualification learners will gain their licence to practice and it is intended that learners will be able to access higher education or enter the workforce as Early Year’s Educators. Learners can progress onto various job roles in statutory, voluntary or private sectors such as:

  • Practitioner in day nurseries
  • Practitioner in nursery schools
  • Practitioner in reception classes in primary schools
  • Pre-school worker
  • Home-based childcare
  • Nanny

    • Washington Campus an award winning campus that is home to Washington Sixth Form and our higher education provision. Located between Gateshead and Washington it was built on the site of the former Usworth School. It was developed to cater for up to 850 people from in or around the Washington area.
