Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at North Bromsgrove High School

Course description

This course allows students to combine theory and practice, centering on group work and the rehearsal of scenes. There are opportunities to act and design, building levels of expertise. Independent learning tasks include essays, presentations and rehearsals.

Course content

Unit 1: Coursework (40%) – devising an original performance piece, using one key extract from a performance text and a theatre practitioner as stimuli. Students can choose to be performers or designers. Assessment also includes a written or recorded portfolio to support the performance.

Unit 2: Coursework (20%) – a group performance or design realisation of one key extract from a performance text. A monologue or duologue performance or design realisation from one key extract from a different performance text.

Unit 3: Examination (40%) – analysing and evaluating a live theatre performance students have seen; responding to an unseen extract from a performance text already studied; an extended response question reimagining a text studied as a production for a contemporary audience.

Entry requirements

- Grade 6 in English Literature or a 5 in English Language.
- Students do not need to have studied GCSE drama, but for those who have, a grade C is needed. Enthusiasm, commitment and the ability to participate and work as a group are all essential. These requirements are in addition to our standard entry requirements.
