English at St Aldhelm's Academy
Students may study:
Grades are awarded through controlled assessments and final exams.Controlled assessment replaced coursework in 2010. Young people on the English pathway will sit four pieces of controlled assessment. On the double pathway young people will sit five pieces.
All students will be assessed on three pieces of speaking and listening work completed under controlled conditions.
Literature students will study a further range of literary texts such as A Christmas Carol and Blood Brothers.
The choice of which pathway a young person follows is made by teaching staff following the study of attainment levels achieved in Key Stage 3.
English assessment is through the three key focuses of:
Writing tasks will assess students’ spelling but more emphasis is placed upon fluent, controlled and interesting writing with a good range of vocabulary, sentence construction and paragraphing.
Reading and speaking tasks encourage young people to produce personal and critical responses.
