Drama and Theatre Studies AS and A2 Level at Cheltenham Bournside School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

Theatre Studies allows students the opportunity to combine a sophisticated practical and academic response to theatre in all its forms.

Students will study set texts and the work of several theatrical practitioners as well as participating in group projects producing original performance work and performing scripted plays.

To be a high achiever in Theatre Studies we expect students to work co-operatively and sensitively with others. Students should be able to give up time outside school hours and have a genuine interest in theatre. A willingness to experiment with new ideas and a sense of fun are also important.

Course content

AS: exploration and performance; theatre makers in practice.

A-Level: devising; text in performance; theatre makers in practice.

Entry requirements

It is not necessary for students to have studied GCSE Drama, although the course does build on the practical and academic skills gained at GCSE. If a student has not previously studied Drama, they must successfully pass an entry test. If the subject has been studied before, a C grade must have been achieved.


AS: group performance; examination.

A-Level: devising performance coursework; group performance; examination.

Future opportunities

This is a good qualification for anyone considering working in the performance/media industry. Drama and Theatre Studies gives excellent background in the understanding of communication in all its forms, intrapersonal, interpersonal and group communication.
