English Language AS and A Level at The Oxford Academy

Course description

Students of AS/ A Level English Language learn to build on the skills they’ve developed at GCSE, by engaging creatively and critically with a wide range of texts and discourses. You’ll get the chance to work on data analysis, discursive essays, directed writing, original writing and research-based investigative writing, which will allow you to develop a wide range of skills. These include critical reading, evaluation, the ability to develop and sustain arguments and a number of different writing skills which are invaluable for both further study and future employment.

Course content

Language, the individual and society: Textual variations and representations, children’s language development (0–11 years) and methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities

Language diversity and change: Language diversity and change, language discourses and writing skills and methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities

Language in action: Language investigation, original writing, and methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities

Entry requirements

5 A*-C including English and Maths level 5; minimum level 6 in GCSE English Language

There are a number of exciting careers ahead of someone studying AS/ A Level English Language including:

    • We all know it’s not just about what you learn, it’s about how you learn and where. With that in mind, we have created a dedicated Advance Centre which includes its own common room, refectory and study area, just for sixth formers. This gives you the space you need to do joint work, get creative or just have a break. You will also have access to the brilliant library with its specific section for careers and higher education, as well as all the resources you’ll need for your courses. You will be able to use all of our sports facilities, regardless of whether you’re studying a sports related course or not. These include:

      • Sports Hall for futsal, basketball, netball, volleyball, trampolining… anything you want to do indoors
      • 3G Dome – the only covered 3G in the county
      • Astro pitch for hockey and football
      • Multi Use Games Area so you can do a whole host of things here; tennis, netball, table tennis 
      • Grass pitches for rugby, football, lacrosse
      • Physiotherapy room with physio support available by appointment  from  Oxford United physios just in case you need help with an injury
      • Dance studio
      • Fitness studio
      • Cricket nets

      We also have art rooms, a food technology room, a fully functioning theatre and drama studio, recording studio and a hair and beauty salon with treatments available from students studying Beauty.

      When you’re not studying there’s plenty of other activities you can be doing in state of the art facilities. Advance isn’t just about helping you pass your exams, it’s about helping you become the best person you can be and that means you’ve used the space to explore what you love.
