IB Biology at King Ethelbert School

Course description

IB Biology (SL) will give you the opportunity to experiment with and deepen your understanding of biology. It will include exploration of some of the latest developments in biotechnology. The topics covered in the Core of IB Biology include cells, biochemistry, genetics, ecology, evolution, human health and physiology. The option subjects vary from microbiology and biotechnology to neurobiology and behaviour. The course includes a high proportion of practical work.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 A* to C including English and mathematics and B in Core/Additional Science or C or better in Biology as a separate science


Assessment is in 4 sections:

Paper 1: 30 multiple choice questions on the Core Concepts

Paper 2: section a - data based question and several short answer questions about the Core section b - 1 choice from 3 extended response questions

Paper 3: several short answer questions on the two option topics ( to be agreed with the teacher) studiedInternal

Assessment: project and a mixture of short and long term investigations, including 40 hrs of practical work

Future opportunities

Students who do well at the IBCP are well placed to move into the world of work, Higher or Further Education. They will have the qualifications, skills and qualities that are valued by employers in all sectors.
