Media Studies A Level at The Knights Templar School

Course description

This course is valuable preparation for university courses in Media, English and English Literature, Politics, Communication, Social Sciences, as well as courses requiring strong analytical skills. It is a subject which develops knowledge and understanding about the wider world, modern society and allows creativity and analysis.

The course consists of 4 modules, 2 at AS level and 2 at A Level.


  • Foundation Portfolio (Coursework) Creation of the opening sequence to a horror film with titles. The portfolio, to include detailed research and planning, is presented in the form of a blog.
  • Key Media Concepts (External Exam). There are 2 areas of study:
  1.  Textual Analysis and Representation of a TV Drama
  2.  Audiences and Institutions study of a chosen media industry, Video Games.

A Level

  • Advanced Portfolio (Coursework) main and ancillary Creation of a short Film Noir film (five minutes). With a presentation of their research, planning and evaluation in electronic format.
  • Critical Perspective (External Exam) There are 2 areas of study:
  1. Theoretical Evaluation of Production: students describe and evaluate the skills they have developed in their coursework in relation to media concepts
  2. Contemporary Media Issues: “We Media and Democracy”, “Contemporary Media Regulation” and “Media and Collective Identity”

Students need to cover 3 elements: historical; contemporary and future use and development of their production portfolio brief; this must include media theories, knowledge of texts and industries, personal engagement with issues and debate. We attend conferences and study days to enhance student’s subject knowledge. 

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths, for a full level 3 programme. Candidates are expected to have gained a B grade at GCSE English.
