Course description

A wide range of disciplines offered include: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mix-media, collage, digital media and photography. The emphasis is on achieving a balance of technical skill, personal expression and contextual knowledge. Students will learn about the work of other artists to inform their own development. Students will also build a specialist vocabulary and the knowledge and an understanding of the place of art, craft and design in history and in contemporary society. Workshops and visits to visual art exhibitions are an important part of the course as are the many extra- curricular opportunities on offer at the School. Students are encouraged to work independently in the art studios, make use of supported prep evenings, and enter prestigious competitions, where we have had many prize winners over the years.

Entry requirements

Students electing to take Art and Design A Level should be hard working, determined, self-motivated and good at managing their time. It is important to show a willingness to experiment and be analytical in approach. Good drawing skills are a big advantage but technical ability is not the only key to success.

Future opportunities

Progression after Sixth Form: Art & Design can lead to a wide range of careers in the many creative industries the UK is respected for, including: Artist, architect, photographer, set designer, product designer, graphic designer, teacher and many more. The investigative, analytical, creative and evaluative skills acquired on an Art and Design course are highly transferable to other areas of study.
