Professional Cookery Level 2 NVQ Diploma at The City of Liverpool College

Course description

Our courses are highly practical and our students leave the college well prepared to start a career in one of the world’s fastest growing industries after having enjoyed a substantial taste of it. This course is unit based and will be assessed both at work and in College. You will gain professional practical skills and valuable experience working in our superb training facilities and Realistic Working Environment.

The industry is growing year on year and this is particularly true for our region with the expansion of quality restaurants and hotels in the city centre and across Merseyside. The theory behind the qualifications are the belief that a chef needs to have a sound foundation of high quality professional skills and to be able to apply these skills across a range of processes and techniques.

The qualification provides students with a large amount of professional practical skills and knowledge to enable them to meet the modern needs of industry.

All candidates enrolled on a Diploma in Professional Cookery will follow a specific learning programme, completing a range of theoretical and practical task activities. You will be supported in the workplace by one of our assessors.

This course follows an Apprenticeship Framework (one year min) and includes NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery, Technical Certificates and Functional Skills.

Entry requirements

Entry Level 3 English and Maths. NVQ Level 1 Professional Cookery or a mature learner must have practical experience of working within the catering industry. You will also need a work placement. Full uniform is required to work in the kitchens.

    • The College's Duke Street centre is located amongst the City's bustling RopeWalks conservation area famous for it's port related heritage and vibrant culinary scene. The centre is located just a few minutes walk from the City's world class shopping centre, Liverpool One.

      This campus is the central location for apprenticeships and both further and higher education courses in catering, hospitality, travel, tourism and leisure as well as hair, beauty and holistic therapies.

      All students have access to well-resourced facilities including modern industry standard teaching workrooms, kitchens and laboratories and salons kitted out with modern, industry-specialist equipment.

      The Academy Restaurant, Academy Hair, Beauty and Holistic Therapy Salons, The Graduate Hair Salon and The Academy Café are located here in purpose built, industry standard facilities. As commercial ventures, they provide authentic working environments for students in training, as well as first-rate food produce and services and hair and beauty treatments to the public at highly competitive prices.
