Government & Politics AS Level at Highbury College

Course description

After an exciting election that was extremely hard to call in 2015 there has been an increasing interest in this subject.

The policy decisions made by our government affect many aspects of your life including you planning to come to college and this course will help you gain an understanding of government and politics in practice in the UK and USA.

It is an academic subject that would complement many of the A Levels on offer but particularly Law, History, Psychology, Sociology and English

Course content

You will look at the links between government and the public, the political parties, pressure groups and elections.

You will also look at the concepts and institutions that underpin government and politics within the UK including the judiciary and the constitution. 

Entry requirements

You will normally be expected to have five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Mathematics. You will be expected to have a grade B in History.

Assessment

You will take two exam papers.

 

Future opportunities

Government and Politics is a subject that helps you understand how our country is run and how the various institutions fits together. This knowledge of current affairs is a valuable addition to any CV.

You may want to go and study a degree in politics and aspire to become a politician or work within government. The college has various links with Universities in the area.

The A Level will also provide you with the skills required on any academic degree.
