Sociology AS/A-Level at Shire Oak Academy

Course description

In Y12: During the AS component of the course, students will complete two units.

In Y13: A level students will complete a further three units.

In Y12:

  • Families and Households
  • Research Methods and Education with Methods in Context

In Y13:

  • Education with Theory and Methods
  • Families and Households
  • Beliefs in Society and Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods

Entry requirements

The course provides a smooth transition from GCSE Sociology, although this is not a prerequisite for studying AS Level Sociology. Students must have achieved a grade C in English and have gained a reasonable range of GCSEs at grade C or above.

Future opportunities

A-level Sociology would be of particular value to students planning to work in fields such as social work, police, teaching, nursing, psychology, personnel work, health service management, journalism, business management, local government, civil service etc.
