Course description

This course is for those who are looking for a career in dance. This course is ideal if you have intermediate level dance skills and a particular interest in developing both your practical and theoretical understanding of dance. The course is practical in nature and suitable for students considering pathways into higher education dance training or employment in the industry.

Course content

On this course you will study all aspects of dance, including contemporary, ballet, jazz, choreography and technique. In addition you will study other aspects of the performing arts including physical theatre, contact improvisation, site specific, audition techniques and relevant industry skills. As part of the course you will also study historical and contemporary dance work. You will learn and perform choreographed pieces and devise exciting new work of your own, which will be performed in public.

The course provides opportunities to develop skills in creativity and performance. The course offers technical skills and professional training, opportunities to see professional work in the theatre and to gain experience through a range of professional workshops.

The course is defined through a variety of unit options, enabling students to develop both practical and theoretical skills related to their chosen area of study. All dance students study a range of different dance units to give a broad introduction to the many aspects within dance.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs grades A* – C or BTEC Level 2 Diploma (merit grade). Experience and understanding of dance is essential, and will be assessed by interview and audition.

Assessment

  • Assessment is by coursework based on assignments set in each unit
  • Assignments will involve: performance projects, individual research, group work and project work
  • Assessments are graded at distinction, merit or pass level
  • On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded an overall distinction, merit or pass grade.

There are a vast number of opportunities available to you on completion of this course. Every year our dance students progress to some of the best known universities for performing arts in the country. These have included: London Contemporary Dance School, LIPA, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Performers College, Urdang Academy, Laban Centre for Movement & Dance, Northern Contemporary Dance School, London Studio Centre, Arts Education, Stella Mann, Italia Conti, Chichester University, Middlesex University and Roehampton University.

Dance students are also accepted on a wide range of other courses, or employed in the entertainment or leisure industries at technician or trainee management level. Previous students have also been employed by organisations within the performance arts industry or go onto teaching qualifications.
