Physical Education A Level at Queen Elizabeth High School

Course description

Through studying A Level Physical Education you will have the opportunity to learn more about the sporting environment. The subject is really three academic disciplines in one package: physiology, psychology and sociology in the sporting environment.
- You will have the opportunity to explore issues associated with the structure and functionality of the body and how this impacts on physical performance. Why is Usain Bolt so successful?
- The significance of the mind and its impact on performance at all levels. All elite athletes have great skills so why do the same performers always succeed?
- Social structures which impact on the value placed on sport and its role in society. Why have two Olympic rowers come from Hexham and none from the rest of the Tyne Valley?

Unit G454: The Improvement of Effective Performance and the Critical Evaluation of Practical Activities in Physical Education


Requires the learning, retention and retrieval of key concepts both scientific and humanity based. Successful candidates possess the capacity to link the key concepts in a practical context. Candidates also need to be able to perform effectively in two practical activities. The ability to analyse the performance of another individual, and to provide a verbal critique, including ideas to develop the performance, are also assessed. Assessment is exam and performance based (as specified above). Exam questions include short answer questions and an extended written response for each of the three disciplines (see Unit G451 guidance).

Future opportunities

Former students have progressed to university to study a very wide range of undergraduate courses including the following disciplines: sports studies, sports science, medicine, physiotherapy, engineering, mathematics, business, management and finance. Subject qualifications for enrolment on undergraduate courses will clearly vary. Students who intend to pursue a career in sports science should consider also taking a science based course.
