Business Studies A Level at Holy Cross Sixth Form College
This course will help you develop an understanding of how to set up and run your own business as well as giving you the skills and knowledge that allow you to reason and understand the decisions that large multinational companies make. It is both suitable for those wanting to start up their own business and those wishing to go and work for large corporations. You will be given the opportunity to get involved in enterprise activities. In the past we have organised events with Young Enterprise and Peter Jones' NEA. We have also run some amazing enrichment trips ranging from overseas visits to New York and Washington to more local visits such as the Coca-Cola factory in Wakefield.
In 2015 we are starting the new linear A Level AQA Specification. The course will begin with a general introduction to Business. You will study the nature and purpose of businesses and the different business forms including the varying types of leadership and management styles. However, the main focus of year one is on the functional areas of the business - Marketing, Finance, Operations and Human Resources. For each functional area you will study it's responsibilities and how it can help to improve the competitiveness of the business. Throughout the year we will also consider the interrelationships between the different functional areas. In the second year of the course we move on to consider the business from a strategic, rather than functional, viewpoint. You will study the different strategic directions businesses will take and how they will then go about pursuing these strategies.
General college entry requirements. In addition, you must have a grade C or above at GCSE Maths and English Language. If you have studied GCSE Business or equivalent, you must have passed it at grade C or pass standard.
The A Level will be assessed at the end of the second year and will consist of 3 external examinations. The types of assessment on the examinations will range from multiple choice questions to high mark essay questions. Throughout the year you will have opportunities to develop both your numeracy and literacy skills, for example, completing financial accounts, reading business case studies and writing essays on different businesses. All of the A Level will be taught by using as many real life examples as possible so you can relate what you have learnt to the real world.
A significant proportion of our students go on to study business related degree courses at university - proof that Business is an enjoyable and interesting subject! The course is also useful for other degrees as Business Studies helps you to develop a number of skills. For those that study Business Studies, university is not the only option.
