Sociology: A Level at The Howard School
Year 12: Families & Households, Education and Research Methods.
Year 13: The Media, Crime & Deviance and Sociological Theory.
Applications made to The Howard School can be made by both male and female students.
Sociology is a largely literature-based course that requires a great deal of reading from students. Work is assessed in the form of small exam questions and extended answer essay questions. Independent study includes researching sociological studies, making notes and completing written tasks. It is expected that students will complete at least 3 hours of work per week.
For wider reading students are encouraged to buy the two course textbooks:
AQA A Level Sociology Book One by Rob Webb and Hal Westergaard
AQA A Level Sociology Book Two by Rob Webb and Hal Westergaard
Grade 5 in either English Language or English Literature.
The course is 100% examination based. There are 3 exam papers, each totalling 2 hours in duration.
Paper One – Education with Theory and Methods
Paper Two – Families & Households and The Media.
Paper Three – Crime & Deviance with Theory & Methods
During the course students will develop skills including: communication in the form of group and individual presentations, extended writing with a focus on analysis and evaluation and independent research using the internet and textbooks.
Past students of sociology have embarked in careers in the following areas: teaching, lecturing, social work, social policy, banking, the media and the criminal justice system.
