Further Mathematics A Level at Blyth Academy

Course description

Students start to consolidate the more specialised areas of Mathematics they have covered in A Level Maths. Further Maths is becoming a must for anyone wishing to study Maths or a Maths‐related course after Sixth Form but could also be studied by someone who just enjoys the subject and wishes to take it further.

Course content

What is the course content in Year 12?

3 Modules: Further Pure Core 1, Further Pure Core 2 and one Further Applied Module

What is the course content in Year 13?

3 Modules: Further Pure Core 3, Further Pure Core 4 and one Further Applied Module

What will I study?

 Algebra and Functions

 Sequences and Series

 Trigonometry

 Exponentials and Logarithms

 Integration Roots of Polynomials

 Roots and Coefficients of a Quadratic Equation 

 Vectors and Three‐Dimensional Coordinate Geometry

 Differentiation

Entry requirements

Students are required to achieve an A grade in GCSE Maths


All course contents are assessed at the end of the year in a final examination for each module.

Future opportunities

This course is frequently a requirement for the study of Mathematics or related courses in Higher Education. Further Mathematics forms one the pathways into Engineering, Business, Accountancy and Law. With numbers, statistics and computers so much part of modern life, an A Level in Mathematics is one of the most generally useful qualifications. It is extremely valuable to any university.
