Science GCSE at Shenley Brook End School

Course description

Most students will study Core Science and Additional Science leading to two GCSE qualifications. Some students will just study Core Science leading to one GCSE qualification. Some students will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics in more detail leading to three GCSE qualifications. CORE SCIENCE emphasises scientific literacy, that is the knowledge and understanding that people need to engage with science-based issues. Where possible contemporary, relevant contexts are used which can be approached through a range of teaching and learning activities. Modules include 'Keeping Healthy', 'Air Quality' and 'Radiation and Life'. ADDITIONAL SCIENCE is a concept-led course that seeks a deeper understanding of basic scientific ideas. The course focuses on scientific explanations and models giving an insight into how scientists develop scientific understanding of ourselves and the world we inhabit. Modules include 'Chemical Patterns', 'Electric Circuits' and 'Brain and Mind'. TRIPLE SCIENCE further develops an understanding of scientific explanations and how science works. So as well as all the modules in core and additional science, other modules include 'DNA technologies', 'Green Chemistry' and 'Observing the Universe'. It is aimed at those in the higher ability science groups and pupils who we feel will benefit from this route will be invited to join the course.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to prepare for an NVQ Level 1 or 2 in a related subject and depending on your other qualifications, you could progress onto courses leading to the Advanced GCE in Science or Applied Science. With further training, you could go into a job related to science such as a Laboratory Researcher, Science Technician or Pharmacist. You could also go straight into employment as the course is delivered through a work-based training programme, will help you develop the basic scientific skills, knowledge and understanding that employers across the science disciplines are looking for.
