Component 1: Investigating the media
You will be introduced to the theoretical framework - media language and representation - as an essential basis for analysing media products from a range of form. In addition, you will study products from specific media industries and for specific audiences to develop your knowledge and understanding of these areas. You will also consider how media products relate to key contexts as well as how audiences may respond to and interpret media products.
Component 2: Investigating Media Forms and Products
You will be required to study television, magazines and blogs, exploring all areas of the theoretical framework - media language, representation, media industries, and audiences - in relation to audio-visual, print and online products. You will study these with close analysis set texts, investigating use of media language and the representations they offer in relation to relevant social, cultural, economic, political, and historical contexts. You will also explore media industries.
Component 3: Media Production
This component synthesises knowledge and understanding of the media theoretical framework gained throughout the course by requiring you to apply your knowledge and understanding of the media synoptically creating a practical production.
Component 1: Investigating the media in depth
You will revisit the theoretical framework for texts studied in Y1 and extend on your analysis.
Component 2: Investigating Media Forms and Products in depth
You will revisit television, magazines and blogs studied in Y1 exploring all areas of the theoretical framework - media language, representation, media industries, and audiences - in relation to audio-visual, print and online products, and extend your knowledge for Y2.
Component3: Media Production upgrade
You will have the opportunity to revisit Y1 coursework and upgrade your practical production by adding to your creative piece.
5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including at least a grade 4 in English Language.
Assessment for the course will be through examination (70% in total). There will be two exams: Component 1 (35%), Component 2 (35%), and coursework (30%).
The skills you will develop on this course are good preparation for any career involving media, film or journalism. The course gives you a wide array of skills to prepare you for taking a university Degree in subjects including Media Studies, Journalism, Graphic Design, Marketing and other business or creative subjects. All industries rely upon the media to support their business interests, whether this is a Facebook page, Twitter update, website or weekly publication/blog.
Media Studies compliments many of the core subjects you may study at A-level. By studying it you will also develop independent research skills and will have the opportunity to develop your own views and interpretations on different subjects.
